Cyberbullying

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the intentional and repeated mistreatment of others through the use of technology, such as computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.

Why cyberbullying is different

It can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It can happen at any time of the day or night. Messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It can be difficult and sometimes impossible to trace the source. Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts, and pictures is extremely difficult after they have been posted or sent.

What you can do to prevent it

  • Educate yourself
  • Protect your password
  • Keep photos "PG"
  • Log out of online accounts
  • Never open unidentified messages
  • Pause before you post
  • Raise awareness
  • Set up privacy controls
  • Google yourself
  • Don't be a cyberbully yourself

What you can do if it happens to you?

Talk about it, and...

  • Ignore them
  • Never retaliate
  • Tell them to stop
  • Laugh
  • Save the evidence
  • Block access
  • Report it to the content provider
  • Do not pass along messages from cyberbullies
  • Call the police
